Weed mat: Heavy-duty landscape fabric, woven weed barrier fabric, or non-woven geotextile fabric
Garden edging (plastic, metal, stone, etc.)
Ground staples
Scissors or a utility knife
Shovel or spade
Mulch, gravel, or decorative stone (optional)
Remove all weeds, grass, rocks, and debris.
Level the ground and lightly compact the soil to create a smooth surface.
Tip: If the ground is already covered with grass or light weeds, you can lay the landscape fabric directly on top. Over time, the lack of sunlight and air will naturally kill the vegetation underneath—no need for extra
Place edging along the border of your desired area.
For plastic or metal edging, insert and hammer into the ground.
For stone, dig a trench and align the stones neatly.
Ensure the edging is secure and level.
Roll out the garden weed fabric across the cleared area.
Cut to fit, overlapping edges by 6–12 inches for better coverage.
Cut X-shaped holes where plants will go.
Use landscaping fabric stakes to fix the fabric in place:
Every 6–12 inches along edges
Every 1–2 feet across the middle
Smooth out wrinkles and ensure the fabric lays flat.
Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, bark, gravel, or decorative stone.
This helps protect the fabric from UV rays and improves aesthetics.
